The Environment Minister for the province of Newfoundland, Canada is calling for a cleanup of a massive tire pile in Stephenville, NL. Tom Osbourne, the province’s Environment Minister said that the department filed an order late last month for the company, Newfoundland Envirotire Shred, to take immediate actions to remedy many of the problems that have been plaguing the site.
Osbourne noted that the orders, filed July 23, called for several steps to be taken care of in 15 days; with several other steps to be taken care of within 30 days. Several of the requirements that needed to be tackled within 15 days included removing and disposing of tires that were not in approved sites; reducing the size of the tire piles; separating the shredded and crumb rubber from the whole tires; and creating space to allow for emergency vehicles and other safety agencies to have access to some of the locations.
Despite the clean-cut requirements, Osbourne says the company has made no attempt to remedy any of the problems.
The company has around 350,000 tires on its site. The company had a contract with the province to take in tires. However, the company withdrew from the contract recently.
