The board of directors for the Development Authority of the North Country (DANC), which serves New York’s Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties by providing technical services and infrastructure to enhance economic opportunities, has approved a program granting financial perks to counties that implement single-stream recycling, according to a report from the Watertown Daily Times.
DANC will contribute 33 percent, up to $100,000 per county, toward capital investments counties make in implementing single-stream recycling. It also will reimburse counties $5 per ton for recyclables sent to single-stream recycling facilities, the Watertown Daily Times reports.
The program will be implemented on a trial basis for 15 months. It will then be evaluated for its success at reducing the amount of recyclables coming to the Rodman, New York, landfill.
The Watertown Daily Times reports that St. Lawrence County began its single-stream recycling program in 2013, with materials being transported to Casella Waste Systems in Stanley, New York. Lewis County will begin its program in 2016, with materials heading to the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority in Utica.
Jefferson County has not yet transition from source-separated recycling to single stream, the newspaper reports, adding that county officials say the transition would be too expensive.
Counties that already have implemented single-stream recycling also are eligible for funding to help buy equipment, such as trucks and compactors, related to transporting recyclables.
