New Haven Mayor Calls for Moratorium on Waste Management Expansions

Mayor looks to postpone any new projects for one year.

John DeStefano Jr., Mayor of New Haven, Ct., yesterday announced that he is proposing the city implement a one-year moratorium on construction of new or expansion of existing waste management facilities in the city.

The decision to issue a call for a moratorium comes while three companies in New Haven have applied for permits from the state of Connecticut’s Department of Environmental Protection to construct facilities in the city. The three are Waste Management Inc., Sani-Marine, and Gateway Terminal.

A spokesman for the Mayor’s Office said the city’s Board of Alderman could hear the proposed legislation as soon as this Tuesday during its weekly meetings.

One reason the mayor is calling for a moratorium on new projects has been the high level of asthma and other health-based issues that afflict many people in the city.

“It is more of an environmental concern, rather than anything else,” the spokesman said.

According to local press reports, the moratorium is part of a long-term plan to improve usage of waterfront property in the city, officials said. The municipal development plan for River Street includes a proposal to transition Fair Haven into a light industrial area, with a park along the Quinnipiac River.
