New Hampshire Discusses Single Stream Recycling

Forum took place at an NRRA special membership meeting.

The Northeast Resource Recovery Association (NRRA), Epsom, N.H., held a special membership meeting on July 16 to discuss single stream recycling and its alternatives for its member cities and businesses. The forum included more than 85 members and helped members evaluate the benefits of single stream recycling to their businesses and communities. While single stream recycling has been around for some time, it is just starting to be considered as a solution for New Hampshire.

Currently, NRRA members sell their recyclables to vendors who reuse the products to create new material. When the items are sorted by residents before they arrive at their local transfer station, it cuts down on processing costs and increases revenue to the municipality.

“Single stream is a great option for some communities,” says Fuat Ari, executive director of NRRA. “However, each town needs to weigh the costs and impact of switching to this method carefully.”

In addition to single stream programs, NRRA is also offering a consolidation program and dual stream recycling program to its members.
