New Glass Recovery System Approved by Council

Canadian city approves glass recycling system.

The city of Guelph, Ontario’s City Council has approved the expenditure of $500,000 to purchase a glass recovery system. The Council meeting, held July 17th, will allow the city to collect around 8,800 metric tons of glass that was destined for the surrounding landfills.

The project will create a system whereby contaminants will be separated from glass entering the city’s MRF. The city estimates that the annual operating savings of processing the glass will be around $150,000 per year. Additionally, the savings will result in an operating budget decrease for the city’s Solid Waste Resources.

According to local press reports at the present time the city of Guelph pays around $36 a per metric ton to have the glass recycled. However, that still is less than the cost to dispose of the material.
