A new wood recycling facility, partly funded by the Waste & Resources Action Programme, will increase wood recycling and boost the production of higher value recycled wood products across Central England.
The new facility is being developed by R Plevin & Sons Ltd, at Elkesley in Nottinghamshire. At full capacity, it will be capable of reprocessing almost 100,000 metric tons of waste wood annually which will be used to manufacture a variety of recycled wood products, including high quality animal bedding, feedstock for panel board manufacturing and fuel for renewable energy production. The site will also feature a green waste composting facility.
R Plevin & Sons Ltd was awarded the WRAP capital grant worth £612,500 through an open competition process. The funding, which contributes to a total investment of £3.5 million in the new facility, is one of four support agreements awarded by WRAP under this capital competition to accelerate investment in new wood reprocessing capacity.
As well as investment in plant and machinery, the development of the site involves improvement to roadways, new surfacing and the erection of new buildings to house the new plant and for the storage of finished products.
Key to the project's success in attracting the WRAP funding was the inclusion of a new reprocessing, grading and packaging facility. The new plant will ensure the removal of contaminants and subsequent grading of reprocessed wood to a very stringent standard thus enabling the production of high quality animal bedding products.
Tom Fourcade, WRAP's Material Sector Manager for Wood, said: “Plevin’s new Elkesley facility is a great example of the type of project that WRAP looks to fund - where sophisticated reprocessing and grading plant can produce a range of added value products. This will be a class leading wood recycling facility of national significance.”
Jamie Plevin, Managing Director of R Plevin & Sons Ltd, added: "The WRAP funding has been vital in enabling us to make our investment at Elkesley and will allow us to further develop our business and become first class producers of recycled wood products in Central England."
