Nebraska DEQ Awards More than $1 Million for Tire Recycling Projects

Program expected to remove around 670,000 tires from state.

The Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality Director Mike Linder announced that the state is awarding $1,158, 805 to support 91 tire recycling and cleanup projects across the state.

It is expected that the grant money will allow the state to collect, process and recycle around 670,000 scrap tires

The grants are part of the Waste Reduction and Recycling Grants program, which is administered by the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality. The grants support both the collection of scrap tires and the purchase of new tire-derived products.

2006 grant recipients include:

Butler County Landfill, David City – awarded $29,200 to purchase scrap tire processing equipment, including conveyors and a scrap tire derimmer/wheel crusher to use in the landfill’s existing tire processing facility. This equipment will allow the Butler County Landfill to continue to annually convert about 4000-5000 tons of scrap tires into daily cover for use at the landfill.

L. P. Gill Landfill , Jackson – awarded $106,000 to purchase scrap tire processing equipment to process up to 5000 tons of scrap tires annually into shreds to be used as daily cover at the landfill.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln – awarded $62,500 as partial reimbursement of the cost of FieldTurf, an artificial turf surface installed in 2005 at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln. Crumb rubber made from about 14,000 Nebraska scrap tires were used as a fill material on this turf surface.

Forty-three scrap tire “Amnesty Day” collection sites – awarded $695,522.58 to conduct scrap tire collections at locations across the state. Forty-three political subdivisions will be holding scrap tire amnesty collection site cleanups this year. Funds have been made available to clean up over 6,700 tons of scrap tires from individuals, farms, and businesses. The tires will be converted into crumb rubber for playground surfaces, running tracks, and artificial turf surfaces. They will also be processed into shreds for daily cover at landfills, and for use in leachate collection systems and around septic tank laterals. Other scrap tires will be hauled to scrap tire monofills (landfills that accept only scrap tires) outside of Nebraska.
