A local auto recycling facility, Webb’s Automotive, has come to an agreement with the state of North Carolina to move its locations in Kinston, N.C. The auto salvage yard is located in a flood plains area of the state. The deal with Webb’s is the second agreement worked out between the state of North Carolina and scrap yards in the city.
According to the Kinston (N.C.) Free Press, six scrap yards in the city were originally part of the state’s buy-out program. Agreements with most of the rest of the facilities are expected to be complete by next month.
The agreement ends several years of acrimony between the two parties. According to local press reports the state agreed to pay $875,000 for the facility. The state decided to purchase a number of scrap and salvage yards in flood plains areas of the city after a flood in 1999 covered much of the scrap yards in the area.
Dan Webb, the owner of the auto salvage yard, said the facility would be closed and moved to another facility he owns in front of the Kinston city complex. Webb says that despite the settlement, the length of time between when the government approached his facility and when the deal was completed, this month, has resulted in sizable losses for his company.
Webb expects to have the facility shut down completely by this November.Get curated news on YOUR industry.
