Charlotte County, NC, opened its second transfer and recycling facility Nov. 15th. The first county owned and operated facility was opened three years ago.
The plant, which cost around $1.8 million, will give residents of the county an outlet for a wide range of material, including many traditional recyclables, as well as electronic scrap material, compostables, and wood material. The county facility will not be taking in any food waste or demolition material from businesses.
In addition to recyclables, the facility is accepting a range of hazardous waste materials, including paints and pesticides, bulky items such as furniture, and derimmed tires.
There is no charge for residents of the county for dropping off material.
Along with taking in some waste and recyclables, the facility has included a reuse center. This component will take in material that can be reused. The material will be sold, with the proceeds from the sale going to the Charlotte County Center for Abuse & Rape Emergencies.
Barbara Kuhla, a spokeswoman for the county department, said that while much of the county already has curbside collection of recyclables, the facility is expected to still attract a fair amount of recyclables.
