NC County Commissioners Vote to Require Fencing at Scrap Yards

Original proposal was submittee in early 2004.

Burke County, NC, Commissioners voted last week to adopt a measure requiring scrap yards in the country to install fencing or vegetation around the property. According to local press reports Commissioners voted unanimously for the zoning ordinance.

If a company opts to install fencing it must be at least 7 feet high; for vegetation, the buffer must be at least ten feet wide.

The change applies only to scrap yards registered as legitimate businesses with the county. The Planning Department is cracking down on an unknown number of people running illegal scrap yards.

According to the Charlotte Observer, the original proposal went before commissioners in February, calling for a 10-foot-high fence and vegetation 15 feet wide. But commissioners and Planning Board members worried about placing too heavy a financial burden on the business owners. So planners decided to scale down the requirements and give scrap yard owners more than a year to meet them.
