NC City Denies Permit for Scrap Recycler

Zoning Commission votes unanimously against scrap yard in Greensboro.

The Greensboro, NC, Zoning Commission has turned down a conditional use permit by D.H. Griffin to locate a scrap metal facility across the street from North Carolina A&T college.

The decision by the Zoning Commission to deny the request by Griffin in a location zoned for heavy industry was attributed to heavy opposition from students and faculty of the university.

The Zoning Commission unanimously voted against the conditional use permit.

The company can appeal the ruling, although, according to a spokeswoman for the Zoning Commission, with the significant opposition the Greensboro City Council would unlikely overturn the ruling.

According to local press reports the company would use a warehouse at the site to collect scrap metal. The company, in its permit request, said the facility would be use as a transfer station for scrap metal.
