PTR Baler & Compactor Co., a manufacturer of recycling equipment headquartered in Philadelphia, has been named a finalist for the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) Sandy Trowbridge Award for Excellence in Community Service. NAM says “PTR had a uniquely positive story to tell about how a company can work with educational institutions in an intercity environment.”
In May, the company, in conjunction with Thomas Edison High School in Philadelphia, opened the PTR Welding Center to promote welding trades at the high school. Students trained at Edison will be able to work in co-op programs at PTR and other Philadelphia-based manufacturers.
Marilyn Perez, principal of Thomas Edison High School, says, “We are elated to be able to offer such a worthy program to our students. Without PTR’s generous donation this dream would not have come to fruition. This program allows young men and woman the opportunity to learn a skill that will allow them after graduation to go directly into the workforce and earn a good living.”
Mike Savage, PTR president and CEO, says, “It’s an honor to be recognized by NAM for the Trowbridge Award and to be a part of the program at Edison that helps hone skills and creates jobs; providing a career in manufacturing for the next generation of young people.”
The company will be recognized at the NAM board of directors’ dinner Oct. 13, 2011, in Washington, D.C.
