NAID Conference Brings in the Crowd

First day of three-day conference starts off with in-depth discussion on shredding operations.

The first day of the Annual Conference of the National Association for Information Destruction Inc. proved to be a hit, as hundreds of attendees mixed business and networking during the first day of the show.

The conference, running May 19-21 in San Diego, mixed a workshop discussion on trends in the shredding industry, with an opening night reception, where more than 61 exhibitors showcased products and services for attendees.

According to several people, the number of attendees at the NAID portion of the show has jumped significantly, with some speculating that actual attendance has grown by more than 100 percent over the past several years.

During the first day of the show attendees met in small groups to discuss some of the issues involved with shredding principals. From the type of shredder to use, to various types of materials and how they should be handled, the more than 200 people who grouped together to discuss many of the most pressing issues, guided by mentors, left the session with a wealth of information, as well as strategies to improve their business.

The session, called “Welcome to Shredding 101,” was sponsored by Evergreen Financial Inc., which provides financial assistance and services to companies in the document destruction business.

According to Evergreen, a professional truck may cost around $10,000 per month to keep in the field. This includes debt service, employee wages and benefits, insurance, fuel, and other costs. Further, bins and consoles, used to collect the material to be shredded, may cost between $60-$70 each.

Adding to that, according to Evergreen, a truck should generate around $25,000 per month.

Outside the meeting rooms, during the first day of the exhibition, a host of equipment companies noted that many attendees were closely looking at adding new equipment and services to enhance their business.

While attendees at the workshop were given great latitude to discuss issues that were most pressing for them, along Evergreen provided an outlook guide that analyzed some of the financial issues when deciding on whether or not to delve into the mobile shredding business.

More coverage of the NAID show will appear throughout the week.
