Fallsburg, N.Y., has received $205,000 from the New York Environmental Restoration Program to investigate contamination at the Hills Holding Corp. Construction and Demolition Debris Landfill, according to a report in the Hudson Valley News (Middletown, N.Y.).
According to the report, eight acres of the 26-acre property were used as an unregulated C&D landfill in 1988, which led to the contamination of the site’s soil and groundwater.
Volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds and PCBs were found in subsurface soil and barium, iron, lead, magnesium and zinc were found in the groundwater, the Hudson Valley News reports.
The investigation will include additional site sampling to determine the most effective method of cleanup. The town plans to redevelop the site for commercial or recreational use, according to the report.
