Tire Solutions International, Inc., a tire recycling operation located in Seneca Falls, N.Y., has filed an appeal with the town after having its request for a permit denied by Seneca County. The company has been conducting its business outside the scope of the zoning permittable standards.
After having its request rejected, the company has filed an appeal with the town of Seneca Falls. Steven Turkett, a zoning officer for Seneca Falls, says the town will hear the appeal next month, at which time the town will decide whether or not to approve the use variance.
The company, which operates a tire chipping operation, has thousands of tires on the site. In addition to its processing site, Tire Solutions operates a storage site on five acres that are on the fringe of the city.
In addition to receiving approval to continue operating at its two locations, the company is in the process of applying with the state of New York’s Department of Conservation to allow it to continue handling tires.
According to local press reports, part of the property on which the tire recycling operation sits has been zoned for highway commercial and the rest is designated agriculture. Turkett said Tire Solutions needs to be in a district for refuse disposal and reclamation.
Turkett said to meet variance requirements, Tire Solutions will need to demonstrate: it cannot realize a reasonable return within the designated land uses; its hardship is unique and does not apply to a substantial portion of the district or neighborhood; the variance will not alter the essential character of the neighborhood; and the hardship was not self-created.Latest from Recycling Today
