Nashville-based MSS Inc., a division of CP Group, released its patented Meatball Magnet sorting system at the Recycled Materials Association (ReMA) Conference & Exposition in San Diego, California, last week.
MSS says this solution automates the separation of contaminants such as motors, transformers and alternators—also referred to as “meatballs”—from shredded steel in automotive shredder facilities.

The system employs artificial intelligence (AI) detection algorithms to trigger electromagnets that sort the material as it travels at conveyor speeds of 250 feet per minute, according to MSS, and can handle multiple items up to 25 pounds at once.
“The Meatball Magnet represents a significant advancement in automated sorting technology for our scrap metal clients,” says Felix Hottenstein, sales director at MSS. “By leveraging similar technical approaches to other well-proven MSS sortation solutions, we are excited to help eliminate a difficult and dangerous manual sorting process while substantially improving steel No. 1 quality and consistency.”
The Meatball Magnet is available in 32-, 48- and 64-inch machine widths, and is protected under multiple U.S. patents, MSS says.
