The Material Recycling Association of India (MRAI) has created the Women's Strategic Unit (WSU), an initiative that aims to achieve a balanced representation of women in leadership roles and throughout the workforce.

MRAI made the announcement March 8 as a tie-in with International Women's Day 2024 and the United Nations’ 2024 theme of “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress,” which focuses on addressing economic disempowerment and inspiring inclusion.

“From sorting and collection in the yards to executives leading companies and associations like ISRI and BIR, women have been playing a pivotal role in the recycling industry,” MRAI says.

The organization aims for its new WSU to collectively drive the entire recycling industry toward greater diversity, equality and toward the mission of "inspire inclusion” in part by developing strategies to enhance the workforce in the recycling sector.

“We are committed to creating diversity and more gender-inclusive participation in the recycling industry,” MRAI President Sanjay Mehta says.

The WSU will focus on developing programs and resources to attract and retain women in the recycling sector, provide opportunities for training and skill development for women, advocate for policies that promote gender equality within the industry and identify and promote incentives provided by the Indian government for women.

“By harnessing the talent and potential of women, we can achieve greater success and contribute significantly to a sustainable future," MRAI Vice President Zain Nathani says.

The association says it will work closely with the central government and state governments to "enhance the presence of women in the recycling sector, empower them through circular economy solutions, and improve their skills and knowledge.”
