Chasm Industries and Morris Recycling donate cash and supplies to hurricane victims.

The Morris Recycling division of Chasm Industries Inc. has donated $20,000 to help provide aide to Mississippi residents affected by Hurricane Katrina. Chasm has donated an additional $31,450 for a total contribution of $51,450 for hurricane relief.

Immediately following Hurricane Katrina, Morris Recycling, New Albany, Miss., donated $10,000 to the local chapter of the American Red Cross and another $10,000 was used to purchase enough water, food and supplies to fill an entire trailer. At the same time, Chasm sent a letter to employees at all its locations throughout the United States asking for donations for the hurricane relief effort. Chasm matched employee contributions and donated a total of $31,450, which was presented to the American Red Cross for hurricane relief.

On Sept. 3, a Morris Recycling truck loaded with supplies left the company’s New Albany plant for Columbia, Miss. Later informed that the need for supplies was greater in Biloxi, Miss., the truck was rerouted and arrived in Biloxi on Sunday, Sept. 4. With the help of the American Red Cross and the Southern Baptist Emergency Response Team, supplies were delivered to local residents.

“I am very proud of all of our employees and their efforts to help others in need at the local level,” says Ben Jennings, CEO of Chasm Industries. “Chasm will continue to be there, and pledge our ongoing support as new challenges emerge for these hard-hit communities.”

The donations were especially important to Morris Recycling employees. Jamie Held, president of Chasm Metals says, “Morris Recycling has been in the recycling business for over 65 years in Mississippi. We thought it was important to take care of our brothers and sisters in Mississippi, and throughout the entire Gulf Coast region who were affected by Hurricane Katrina.”

“I would like to thank Morris Recycling and Chasm for assisting in the hurricane recovery efforts,” comments Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour. “Their contributions will give financial assistance to the Red Cross and supplies to the Katrina victims in the Biloxi area.”
