Monterrey Metal Recycling Solutions, San Antonio, and kids from San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD) want every San Antonian to take a closer look at how much recyclable metal, paper and plastic they are throwing in the trash with the launch of the “We Can Challenge.”

The citywide, monthlong initiative Monterrey Metal has launched seeks to inspire residents, schools and businesses to commit to better recycling and waste-reduction practices that make a lasting impact.
The We Can Challenge, part of the inaugural celebration of San Antonio Recycles Day on Nov. 8, is a call to action highlighting how individual choices can make a measurable difference in protecting our environment and keeping our city beautiful, according to the company.
“We created the We Can Challenge to show that every person in San Antonio and Bexar County has the power to make a measurable difference,” Monterrey Metal Recycling Solutions CEO Jordan Vexler says. “Every can recycled, every item properly sorted and every lesson shared helps prevent pollution, conserve resources and preserve our community for generations to come.”
City leaders presented the official proclamation naming Saturday, Nov. 8, San Antonio Recycles Day to Monterrey Metal Recycling Solutions and children from one of SAISD’s 30 elementary school recycling clubs in a ceremony Nov. 6 at the City Council Chambers in the Municipal Plaza Building.
SAISD elementary schools are leading by example—organizing collection drives, raising awareness and teaching their classmates about the environmental impact of everyday choices, Monterrey Metal says.
“We’re happy to offer educational materials and support to area schools as students learn how recycling helps prevent pollution, reduce waste and conserve finite resources,” Vexler says. “These students are the future of sustainability in our city, and we’re proud to stand beside them.”
About the We Can Challenge
The We Can Challenge encourages families, schools, businesses and community groups to reevaluate what they discard and identify recyclable materials, reduce waste at home, work and school and recycle and share their recycling efforts and photos on social media using #WeCanChallenge and #SanAntonioRecyclesDay.
According to the Recycling Materials Association, Washington, tens of billions of aluminum cans are discarded into landfills every year across the United States—representing more than a billion dollars in lost recyclable material and significant environmental impact. Recycling a single aluminum can saves enough energy to power a laptop for several hours, underscoring how simple daily habits can create large-scale change.
