The Montana Department of Environmental Quality issued a preliminary determination proposing to issue an air quality permit for the Holcim, Inc. cement manufacturing facility. The Holcim facility is located near Trident, Montana.
The draft permit proposes to allow the use of waste tires as a supplemental fuel in the Holcim cement kiln.
The DEQ will hold a public hearing on its proposed decision before the expiration of the public comment period. Details on the public hearing will be provided in the near future.
The company initially applied for the permit in February 2001 for permission to use scrap tires for a portion of its energy needs at the plant.
The public is invited to comment on the preliminary determination, which includes a draft environmental assessment and a draft permit. These may be viewed on the DEQ website at www.deq.state.mt.us Copies may also be obtained by contacting the DEQ Air and Waste Management Bureau at (406) 444-3490.
Comments regarding the preliminary determination and draft environmental assessment are due to the Department by Friday May 9, 2003.
They should be sent to Dave Klemp, DEQ Air and Waste Management Bureau, PO Box 200901, Helena, MT 59620-0901. They may also be faxed to (406) 444-1499 or e-mailed to dklemp@state.mt.us.
