A feature in Salt Lake City’s Slug Magazine examines a local recycler’s efforts to help local businesses dispose of difficult-to-recycle glass.
According to the article, Momentum Recycling installed an on-site glass processing plant in 2012. Residents were then granted the option to participate in a curbside glass recycling system for $7 per month.
“Four thousand three hundred households are signed up for the program,” Jeff Whitebeck, vice president of operations, told the magazine. “And the plant is only a third to a half of its full capacity, and it’s not yet profitable, frankly. So we absolutely have to get a lot more glass … so it can pay for itself.”
According to the article, Momentum also is seeking to educate residents about the facility to encourage more glass recycling. Tours of the plant are available to the public, as well as volunteering opportunities.
“We have a program called the AmGlassAdors,” Momentum President John Lair told the magazine. “We have a range of opportunities … and we’re always looking for people who are motivated.”
