The Missouri State Recycling Program has recently given its Recycling Award to the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) for the organization’s environmental contributions, according to a report in the Missourian (
The award was presented by Gov. Matt Blunt.
Since 2003, MoDOT has used more than 83,000 car tires in construction projects. The organization has also used recycled asphalt shingles. According to the report, the agency has also recycled more than 3.6 billion pounds of material, and has also used manufacturing by-products like fly ash, cement kiln dust, boiler and steel slag in highway building projects.
MoDOT crews also remove more than 80,000 car tires left on state highways every year, which are ground up and used as tire-derived fuel.
The agency has also increased its use of recycled asphalt pavement, according to the report, using more than 3 million tons of asphalt containing recycled content on 1,020 miles of highway.
