Mittal Steel has decided to permanently close its blast furnace at its steel plant in Weirton, WV. The company also has halted taking orders for galvanized steel. A spokesman for Mittal says the decision to discontinue the galvanized steel line will mean the loss of around 40 jobs.
According to published reports the line will be closed within the next three months.
The company also has decided to reconfigure the mill to make it a more prominent player in the tin plate market. Also, the company will perform both cold rolling and hot rolling of steel which it will be taking in from other Mittal Steel plants, including plants in Cleveland, and Sparrows Point. MD.
