MITIE Lands Contract with U.K. Airport

Manchester Airport and MITIE will try to achieve zero waste to landfill from the international airport by 2030.

Management Incentive Through Investment Equity (MITIE), Bristol, U.K., has been awarded a three-year, £1.5 million (US$2.4 million) contract to install a mini-Material Recycling Facility at the Manchester (United Kingdom) International Airport.

As part of the contract, MITIE will treat aircraft waste on-site and expand recycling programs in public areas throughout the airport. The expansion of the recycling program includes placing mixed-recycling bins beside all general waste bins.

MITIE estimates that the airport serves more than 18 million passengers per year.

Mike Taylor, managing director of MITIE’s waste and environmental business, says, “Our approach to waste management, with a focus on treating waste on-site and changing behaviors, has proven an effective model for the sector and we expect similar results for Manchester Airport. MITIE is committed to bringing the airport closer to its goal of zero waste to landfill and becoming carbon neutral for its vehicle use and energy consumption by 2015.”
MITIE says a recycling program it developed at the Cardiff (U.K.) Airport increased that airport’s recycling rates from 20 percent to 75 percent within nine months.

Andrew Harrison, managing director of Manchester Airport, adds, “We have our own targets to increase recycling and waste recovery rates at the airport, and the new contract will assist us in achieving those aims. We are already generating less waste despite increasing passenger numbers, and we are continuing to work alongside our airline and retail partners to increase recycling rates.”
