The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality has recognized both General Recycling and Nucor Steel, both located in Jackson, Miss., for their leadership in reducing mercury emissions. General Recycling recently shipped the first container of automotive mercury switches for recycling from Mississippi.
The Miss. DEQ recently launched a voluntary program to prevent mercury releases to the environment from vehicles being recycling.
On the national level the state is coordinating its efforts with the National Vehicle Mercury Switch Recovery Program. On the state level, MDEQ is partnering with the Mississippi Auto Salvage Association, as well as other organizations to promote the program in recycling facilities.
General Recycling, part of Nucor Steel Jackson Inc., provides the steel mill with much of the raw material for the steel mill.
