Miss. City Denies Scrap Metal Plant

A scrap metal recycler’s plan to move to a larger location has been denied by zoning board.

Tri-Miss Services, a Vicksburg, MS, scrap metal recycling facility, had its proposed plan to relocate to a larger facility denied by the city of Vicksburg, Miss., Zoning Board of Appeals. The company, which operates at a site slightly less than one acre, was looking to move to a larger, five acre facility, which previously was a scrap yard. However, opposition from residents in the area resulted in the board denying the request at a hearing May 2.

While both the existing scrap yard and the new location are both located in areas zoned for industry, according to city ordinances scrap recycling operation would need a special permit to operate at the facility.

The company has ten days in which to appeal the decision either to the Mayor’s office or the City Council member.

According to local press reports, Ben Lilly, manager of the plant, the new facility would operate between 8 AM-4:30 PM, Monday through Friday, and 8 AM to noon on Saturday. The company also would install a fence around the property to reduce the noise and visibility of the yard.
