The state of Minnesota will be holding a public meeting July 9 to discuss the state’s new electronics recycling law. The meeting will be held in Bloomington, Minn.
The Minnesota law, which goes into effect this summer, will require manufacturers of video display devices sold to state residents to recycle 60 percent of the material the first year; and 80 percent of the total weight of the display sold in subsequent years.
Additionally, collectors and recyclers of the VDDs need to register with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency by Aug. 1, 2007, and manufacturers must register by Sept. 1.
Effective Feb. 1, 2008, Minnesota retailers will be unable to sell VDDs made by unregistered manufacturers.
The meeting scheduled for July 9 will outline new requirements placed on manufacturers, retailers, collectors and recyclers of VDDs sold to Minnesota households. Regulated VDDs include televisions, laptop computers and computer monitors with displays larger than nine inches, measured diagonally. Following a question and answer session, electronics manufacturers will be able to connect with Minnesota retailers, collectors, recyclers and local government agencies.
More information about this new program is available at www.pca.state.mn.us/electronics. Manufacturers, retailers, collectors, recyclers and other interested parties are encouraged to sign up for e-mail updates online.
