The city of Minneapolis has chosen BFI to begin negotiations to handle the city’s curbside recyclables program.
The decision was made at the Minneapolis City Council meeting April 2, and ends months of deliberations as the council weighed bids between BFI, Recycle America Alliance and local non-profit recycler Eureka Recycling.
According to a representative with the city of Minneapolis, the new contract is slated to begin the first of next month.
The Minneapolis City Council’s decision went counter to recommendations by the city’s Public Works and Finance departments, which recommended Recycle America Alliance due to its offer to fix the price for old newspaper and used beverage cans.
Materials collected through Minneapolis’ curbside collection program include the following: boxboard, office paper, junk mail, aluminum and steel cans, old corrugated containers, household batteries, old magazines, telephone directories, and plastic bottles.
BFI currently is performing the curbside collection operations for the city.
