First State Tire Recycling, headquartered in East Bethel, Minn., and the Carlton County board of commissioners received a certificate of recognition for excellence in recycling from Minnesota’s Governor Jesse Ventura.
The award commends the county for working with First State Tire Recycling to use scrap tire chips as lightweight fill to correct several road problems. The certificate was recommended by the Recycling Association of Minnesota.
First State Tire Recycling manufactures scrap tires into tire chips to be used as a lightweight fill called Recycled-Tire Engineered Aggregate. The R.-T.E.A. has been used to repair county roads for county residents.
In Minnesota, more than 145 road repairs or new projects have used more than 20 million scrap tires. In Carlton County alone, three recent repair projects have utilized approximately 1.3 million tires.
