Mill Reopening May Be Delayed

The reopening of a paper mill in Deferiet, N.Y., may be in jeopardy after talks between the union and the new owners of the mill reached an impasse this week, according local news reports in western New York.

The new owner, Newstech NY Inc., a unit of Vancouver, B.C.-based Belkorp Industries, held unfruitful talks with the Paper, Allied-Industrial, Chemical and Energy Workers Union International, sources said. The negotiations centered on terms of rehiring, recognizing the union, and the terms and length of the labor contract, according to reports from the Watertown Daily Times and the local television station.

The 220,000 tons/year uncoated and uncoated free-sheet paper mill was expected to partly restart in May. The plant was shut down in March 2001 cutting 400 jobs. Belkorp purchased the mill from bankruptcy late last year and revealed plans to link the plant with a recycled pulp mill that Belkorp acquired in Pennsylvania. Forestweb
