The reopening of a paper mill in Deferiet, N.Y., may be in jeopardy after talks between the union and the new owners of the mill reached an impasse this week, according local news reports in western New York.
The new owner, Newstech NY Inc., a unit of Vancouver, B.C.-based Belkorp Industries, held unfruitful talks with the Paper, Allied-Industrial, Chemical and Energy Workers Union International, sources said. The negotiations centered on terms of rehiring, recognizing the union, and the terms and length of the labor contract, according to reports from the Watertown Daily Times and the local television station.
