Midwest Scrap Management, headquartered in St. Joseph, Mo., is expected to have its newest scrap facility open by this coming April. The new facility will be located on 53 acres in Kansas City, Mo., and will include a mega auto shredder from Harris Waste Management.
While Midwest Scrap has a smaller shredder at its St. Joseph plant, the new mega shredder being installed has a 7,000 horsepower motor, which should allow the company to process between 350-400 tons of material an hour. The shredder will take advantage of the large number of industrial accounts that the company has in the general area.
The new facility is located at the site of the closed GST steel mill. The plant is situated on a river, although not large enough to barge material. Rail siding and a nearby highway make the site an ideal location for the facility. A spokesman for Midwest says the company expects to have around 50 people employed at the site when it is fully operational.
Not content to stick with the second yard, there also are reports that Midwest Scrap is looking to site an additional scrap yard, this one in Sedalia, Mo. According to local press reports the company hopes to have a site picked out within the next three to four months.
