Midwest Scrap Management to add nonferrous system

U.S. Shredder to install system in Kansas City, Missouri, that includes equipment from Steinert and SICON.

Midwest Scrap Management has has selected U.S. Shredder and Castings Group, Miramar, Florida, to build an extensive nonferrous recovery system at its main shredder facility in Kansas City, Missouri, the equipment supplier has announced. Installation of the system began March 2015.

Designed to process 45 tons per hour, the plant will consist of four separate lines that include equipment from Steinert and SICON.

Optimal sizing of material begins with a trommel before moving to a double-deck screen, which is followed by a single screen, U.S. Shredder says. After sizing, the material will flow to the SICON system, consisting of one three-cascade sifter, two three-cascade sifters and an air-knife sifter to separate the light material from the auto shredder residue.

The Steinert equipment includes NES 5009, 6119 and 6119 4T models to separate additional ferrous, ferrous waste and zorba. Further downstream, additional SICON equipment will extract stainless and ICW (insulated copper wire).

Midwest Scrap Management President Jerrit Burgess says the company felt that Steinert and SICON provided the best options during project planning and in terms of system configuration that would optimize ROI (return on investment).”

He continues, “We chose U.S. Shredder and Castings to provide the overall system design, civil engineering, electrical engineering and project management services because of their industry reputation, aggressiveness to secure the contract with Midwest Scrap Management and past success that Midwest Scrap Management has had working with U.S. Shredder.”

Craig Ward, Midwest Scrap Management chief financial officer, says the company selected Klein and Kennedy Construction as the project’s general contractor and Mark One Electric as the project’s electrical contractor based on their extensive industrial construction experience, industry reputations and customer service.

According to Kenny Burgess, Midwest Scrap Management CEO, “We completed a $25 million expansion at our Park City, Kansas, shredder operations in April 2014 and anticipate the completion of the $13 million nonferrous recovery system in August 2015. The continued expansion of our facilities will build upon the growth of Midwest Scrap Management and our continued success.”

Ward adds that the expansions “will allow Midwest Scrap Management to provide commodity purchase prices that meet or exceed the industry average and provide a competitive advantage over our competitors in our respective geographic locations while reducing our environmental footprint.”

He continues, “The goal of the nonferrous recovery system is to enable Midwest Scrap Management to recover additional ferrous and nonferrous commodities while lessening the environmental impact that our ferrous and nonferrous recycling facilities create and to create an end use for the auto shredder residue that remains after processing through the nonferrous recovery system.”

Ward says the nonferrous system will have excess capacity, allowing the company to process material generated at both its Kansas operations with excess capacity that will enable it to process auto shredder residue from its Oklahoma City 7,000-horsepower shredder and from outside sources. The Oklahoma City shredder is scheduled for completion before 2017.

Midwest Scrap Management was founded by Kenny Burgess more than 35 years ago and has, expanded to include ferrous and nonferrous scrap metal recycling facilities in Kansas City and St. Joseph, Missouri; Park City, Kansas; and Oklahoma City.

The U.S. Shredder and Castings Group offers scrap shredders, control systems, downstream systems, nonferrous recovery and air systems as well as shredder castings, service, engineering, construction and installation.
