India’s Jindal Steel & Power Ltd., based in New Delhi, has announced plans to develop a coal gasification-based Midrex direct-reduced iron (DRI) plant in the Angul district of Orissa. The plant will have a production capacity of 1.8 million tons per year, according to a report from Industrial Info Resources (IIR), Sugar Land, Texas.
The project will combine the gasification technology developed by German process engineering company Lurgi GmbH with a 7.15-meter Midrex shaft furnace, and produce DRI iron that will be used in melt shop applications for Jindal, one of India’s largest sponge iron and steel manufacturing companies.
The new DRI plant will use domestically available iron ore and coal, according to the report. According to IIR, this will be the first instance that the commercially available Lurgi technology will be combined with a shaft furnace supplied by Midrex, of Charlotte, N.C. Lurgi GmbH is a subsidiary of Paris-based gas supply company Air Liquide.
The Angul plant will use syngas that is generated in the gasifier to produce DRI that will be melted in an electric arc furnace. The plant will be able to produce hot as well as cold DRI, which will be used in a new melt shop being installed by German engineering company SMS Siemag AG.
