The Planning Commission for the city of Hazel Park, Mich., has approved plans by a scrap recycler to build a scrap metal transloading facility in the city. While the Commission gave the go-ahead to 875 Scrap Iron and Metal LLC,for the project, there are several conditions put on the project, including trucks visiting the site prohibited from taking a right turn onto a residential street that neighbors the facility. Additionally, because the facility falls under the special land use issue the City Council will have to approve the project.
The issue was first brought up to the City Council at their March 27th hearing, but was tabled due to opposition by some residents of the area. One concern expressed by neighbors is that there already is another scrap metal facility within 1,000 yards of the new proposal, and would add to the congestion and ancillary problems that would arise from a scrap yard.
A representative from the Hazel Park Planning Commission said the issue will be brought up to Hazel Park’s City Council at its April 24th meeting.
The facility itself will be used as a storage site for scrap metal. All the material delivered to the site will be kept inside. The company plans to ship the material from the new site to a processing facility that the company already owns and operates in Detroit.
