Michigan’s Department of Information Technology (DIT) has selected Dell to manage removal, refurbishment and retirement of computer equipment from state agencies.
Dell initially will collect more than 2,000 systems the state is currently storing, running a destructive data overwrite on hard drives before refurbishing or recycling them. Michigan DIT is making the same program available to local governments, schools and other non-profits throughout Michigan.
Using Dell Asset Recovery Service (ARS), Michigan DIT expects to conserve state resources by retiring computer equipment more efficiently, according to a press release from Dell. The recycling program will help ensure obsolete equipment is responsibly handled and divert these products from the state’s waste stream.
“We needed to find a more efficient way to retire our obsolete computers by managing the process from pickup to final reporting,” Teri Takai, the state’s chief information officer, says. “The service is easy to implement and provides the high standards of environmental compliance that we demand, as well as processes that address our data security concerns.”
Ken Hashman, vice president of Dell’s deployment services, says, “State and local governments need to stretch technology dollars as far as possible, and having Dell provide easy to use, environmentally responsible computer retirement solutions helps the state of Michigan do just that.”
