Michigan Awards Grants for Tire Recycling Projects

Grants total more than $1.2 million.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment has awarded seven grants totaling $1.2 million to two counties and one university in the state to provide for the increased use of scrap tires in road projects.

The Cass County Road Commission will receive $181,000 to cover 50 percent of equipment costs as well as 50 percent of the costs associated with purchasing rubberized asphalt material and the installation of 1.75 miles of ground-tire-rubber-modified asphalt overlay.
Michigan State University, partnering with the Ingham County Road Commission, will receive $453,000 for 50 percent of the cost to install and test three different modified asphalt pavement designs or types of modified asphalt pavement.
The Saginaw County Road Commission will receive nearly $627,400 distributed among five grant projects for up to 50 percent of the cost to reconstruct approximately 5.75 miles of road using ground-tire-rubber-modified asphalt.
Funding for the grants is available under the authority of Michigan’s Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act. People using scrap tires in road projects in Michigan are eligible to apply for these funds.
