The state of Michigan’s Department of Environmental Quality awarded $600,000 in grant money to help improve the scrap tire recycling infrastructure in the state. It is expected that the grant money will help clean up close to 500,000 scrap tires from sites throughout the state.
Nine applicants are funded under the Scrap Tire Cleanup Program.
Grantees have until August 2002 to complete contract requirements for having their tires removed, processed and used by an end-user acceptable to the DEQ. Sites with abandoned scrap tires and collection sites where tires were accumulated prior to Jan. 1, 1991 are eligible to apply for the funds.
