December 2011 was the second best month in terms of recyclables collected in Florida’s Miami-Dade County, according to county officials. More than 5,730 tons of recyclables were collected in December, helping the county to reach a grand total of nearly 200,800 tons.
Kathleen Woods-Richardson, director of the Miami-Dade County Public Works and Wate Management Department, says, “Thanks to the simplicity of single-stream recycling and the outstanding participation of our residents, we have reached this important milestone in three and a half years, a year faster than we reached it under the old dual-stream recycling program.”
Miami-Dade County provides curbside recycling services to more than 350,000 single-gamily households in the unincorporated areas of Miami-Dade County as well as all residences in 21 participating municipalities: Aventura, Cutler Bay, Doral, El Portal, Florida City, Medley, Miami Beach, Miami Gardens, Miami Lake, Miami Springs, North Bay Village, North Miami Beach, Opa-locka,, Palmetto Bay, Pinecrest, South Miami, Sunny Isles Beach, Surfside, Sweetwater, West Miami and Virginia Gardens.
The county’s recycling program won two awards in 2011: an Achievement Award from the National Association of Counties and a “Recycling and Waste Reduction Award for Outstanding County or City Program (Urban)” from Recycle Florida Today.
