MeWa Recycling Maschinen und Anlagenbau GmbH, based in Gechingen, Germany, has introduced the AlphaCutter series of single-shaft pre-shredders, which it describes as “a high-performance solution for the pre-shredding of domestic and commercial waste,” particularly for waste-to-energy applications.

The AlphaCutter series of slow-running, single-shaft shredders is designed to process difficult materials with high throughput. In three different rotor sizes ranging from 88 inches to 148 inches in length, the new shredders can process up to 50 metric tons per hour.
“Particularly in the area of domestic and commercial waste as well as with heavy materials, such as mattresses, HGV tarpaulin covers and large pressed bales, the progress is huge,” MeWa Managing Director Ulrich Hink says of the technology used in the AlphaCutter.
Shredders in the series are well suited for the preparation of bulky scrap material, according to MeWa, but the slow-running rotor also shreds solid metal parts. The heavy weight of the machine and the arrangement of the blades are designed to ensure stability and vibration-free operation.
MeWa can supplement the AlphaCutter pre-shredder with additional processing equipment, including granulators, conveyors and separation technology on a turnkey basis.
The AlphaCutter shreds the materials into equal pieces that are approximately the size of an adult’s palm, which MeWa says are ideal for the subsequent granulation process. “Thanks to the manner of pre-shredding, it was possible to increase the throughput in the granulator by more than 30 percent,” Hink says.
The AlphaCutter series is available three rotor lengths. The L model features a rotor length of 88 inches and a possible throughput of 20 to 25 metric tons per hour. The XL model features a 128-inch rotor and can process up to 35 metric tons of material per hour. The largest machine, the XXL model, weighs nearly 60 metric tons and is equipped with a rotor measuring approximately 13 feet in length. It is capable of processing more than 35 metric tons of mixed material.
The AlphaCutter’s rotor and blade carrier are encased with special steel for increased wear resistance, according to MeWa, while a hydraulic maintenance door facilitates access to the rotor. A hydraulic repressing device, a central lubrication system and a discharge belt are also part of the basic equipment. The shredder also is equipped with an automatic reversing feature in the event of jamming.
