Metro Auto Recyclers Inc., an auto recycling company located in Valparaiso, Ind., has been inducted into the Indiana Department of Environmental Management’s (IDEM) “Indiana Clean Yard – Gold environmental recognition program." The auto salvage yard is the seventh company in the state to achieve the IDEM auto salvage program’s highest level.
Thomas Easterly, IDEM’s commissioner, says, "I am pleased to see companies like Metro Auto Recyclers Inc. helping to lead the industry down a better path. This is a great example of how we can work with a particular business sector and help them find ways to improve their processes, while protecting Hoosiers and our environment."
"Wrecked vehicles being stockpiled in salvage yards can contain antifreeze, gasoline, oil, brake fluid, transmission fluid, batteries, mercury switches and tires that, if not managed properly, can pose an environmental threat," Easterly continues.
The recognition program was developed by the IDEM and the Automotive Recyclers of Indiana Inc. The goal of the program is to recognize and reward auto salvage yard operators that meet certain environmental criteria.
To achieve the standard, auto salvage yards start by contacting IDEM for an environmental self-evaluation checklist. After correcting any problems as determined by the checklist, the yard becomes eligible for IDEM's Indiana Clean Yard award. If the facility meets additional requirements, they can receive the Indiana Clean Yard - Gold Level status.
Auto salvage recyclers can obtain free, confidential compliance assistance and request confidential site visits by contacting IDEM's Office of Pollution Prevention and Technical Assistance toll free at (800) 988-7901.
