Wisconsin Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen has announced that his office has obtained a judgment against the scrap metal company Metals America LLC, as well as company owner Harvey Siegel, which requires the parties to pay $20,000 in forfeitures, court costs and mandatory surcharges for violating Wisconsin laws regulating ozone-depleting refrigerants at the company’s Brown County, Wisconsin, metal salvage facility.
According to the complaint, from June 1, 2011, to Sept. 8, 2011, Metals America and Siegel intentionally released ozone-depleting refrigerant gases into the atmosphere while dismantling refrigerant-bearing appliances. During this time, Metals America employees, at the direction of Siegel, cut the refrigerant lines on at least 145 refrigerant-bearing appliances, the attorney general alleges.
The stipulation and order for judgment was approved by Brown County Circuit Court Judge Kendall Kelley onJuly 29, 2014.
