Metal Management Inc. announced that it is installing a new Newell Industries 120 by 104 “Mega” shredder at its facility in Phoenix, Ariz. The facility currently buys, processes and sells industrial and post-consumer scrap such as automobiles, appliances, sheet metal, steel, and other types of metal.
The shredder will be one of only eight similar machines operating in the United States. The shredder is powered by a 6,000 horsepower electric motor, and can shred up to three automobiles at a time in less than 20 seconds.
The shredder is expected to be completed and operational by the first quarter of next year. When operational Metal Management will have a total of 11 shredders.
The new “Mega” shredder being installed will replace an older shredder that is more than 20 years old, said G. Robert Triesch, III, vice president-Shredder Specialist for Metal Management.
Metal Management looked at the older shredder and decided that instead of spending the money to upgrade the equipment, a better move would be to buying a newer shredder. The new piece of equipment will be more energy efficient, and allow the company to run a much cleaner shredding process.
Metal Management had been waiting for signs of an improvement in ferrous market before committing to the new shredder. While ferrous markets aren’t booming right now, there has been a turnaround in the markets, which is giving the company the incentive to install the new shredder.
When operational, the shredder can handle as much as 250 tons of material an hour.
