Metal Management Inc., one of the largest scrap metal recycling facilities in the United States, is bidding to operate a stevedoring and bulk handling operation at the Port of Boston.
The company is the top bidder on a project to operate at the 26-acre facility. A spokesman for Metal Management says that the facility would be focused on stevedoring of a host of iron and steel products, including semi-finished steel, pig iron and salt. And, despite some local press reports, the main thrust of the facility would not be a scrap yard.
At the present time there are three bids for the property, with Metal Management having the leading bid. Other bidders for the site include two proposals for air freight operations.
The spokesman noted that the stevedoring would be very similar to the stevedoring operations that are conducted by Metal Management at its facility in Newark, NJ.
