Mervis Opens Recycling Facility in Indiana

Mervis Industries Inc., a scrap metal recycling company based in Danville, Ill., has opened what it calls a full-service recycling facility in Crawfordsville, Ind., under the name Advantage Recycling Crawfordsville. The new recycling plant, a division of Mervis, is situated on 25 acres with an additional 10 acres available for future development, says the company’s Michael Mervis.

Michael Mervis says an ideal feature of the new location is Advantage Recycling’s proximity to Nucor Corp.’s Crawfordsville steel mill. The new metal recycling facility also sits adjacent to a major highway.

The company executive also says the new facility includes some of the most updated equipment available on the market and ample concrete paving designed to ensure that it is easily accessible for both commercial and residential customers. The plant has 10-foot berms on the perimeter and an 8-foot screen to ensure that the operations are not visible from the highway.

In addition to offering full-service metals recycling operations, the new location will be the headquarters of Mervis’s transportation division.

Michael Mervis also notes that the move to open the Advantage Recycling facility is part of the company’s strategy to upgrade and convert its older peddler yards into locations that make them readily accessible, not only for large industrial accounts but also “soccer moms” and the retail business.

Along with both ferrous and nonferrous metals, the Advantage Recycling Crawfordville facility will accept obsolete electronics.

“It is a good fit because it expands our footprint,” says Michael Mervis regarding the location in Crawfordsville. “The location also is ideal because previously we were picking up material in Indiana and having to truck it to our facility in Illinois. Now we can do the processing here, saving time, money and making the operation more environmentally friendly.”

Mervis Industries now operates three facilities under the Advantage name, with more expected. Michael Mervis says that by the end of 2013 the company hopes to have all its consumer recycling facilities operating under the Advantage name.

The company also is working on opening a new scrap metal processing facility at an as-yet undisclosed location and to have the new plant operational by the first half of 2013.
