MegaShredder Heading to Chicago
General Iron Industries, Chicago, will be installing a 122/112 MegaShredder built by the Newell Riverside division of Riverside Products, Moline, Ill.
“Because we operate in a limited space in the heart of a gentrified area of Chicago, we chose a shredder that will more efficiently process scrap in less time,” says General Iron operations manager Adam Labkon. The large capacity shredder will allow the company “to better serve our scrap suppliers and still shut down earlier in the day for the benefit of the neighborhood,” adds Labkon.
The Newell Riverside division, based in San Antonio, will be installing not only the 122/112 shredder, but also a feed ramp, a shredder maintenance platform with a hydraulic pin puller, an operator’s control cabin, an undershredder oscillator, and a computerized shredder control and management system. The shredder will be equipped with a Riverside four-arm double-pin spider rotor.
General Iron’s Labkon says the MegaShredder was chosen “after an exhaustive study of the features and benefits of several machine designs. General Iron is very excited about our new capital expansion. We look forward to being a more effective producer of a higher quality of shredded scrap for the steel mills.”
Newell Riverside president Claude Robinson says the installation of the MegaShredder—combined with an exclusive parts supply agreement—will help the company compete in the scrap metal shredding market. “We believe this shredder sale, coupled with a three-year replacement part supply contract, provides the opportunity to develop a new business model for the ferrous recycling industry.”
Both Newell Riverside and Riverside Products are subsidiaries of Sivyer Steel Corp., Bettendorf, Iowa, one of the nation’s largest steel foundries.
