The Russian mining and metals company Mechel has temporarily halted production at two of its smelting plants Romania. The smelters, located in Targoviste and Ductil Steel Otelu Rosu have halted their operations due to problems shipping in scrap metal because of severe weather conditions. The smelters will close down Feb. 18.
Andrey Deineko, Mechel-Steel Management CEO, says, “Over the past few days, when transport in Romania was paralyzed due to severe snowstorms and abnormal freezing temperatures, the plants have been using their winter stores of scrap, which by now are depleted. Judging by forecasts, the weather will allow us to resume supply shipments shortly.”
Mechel’s businesses include four segments: mining, steel, ferroalloy and power.
