Matalco to add Wisconsin location

Aluminum billet maker plans to invest $80 million in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, plant.

Matalco, headquartered in Brampton, Ontario, has announced plans to build a 110,000-square-foot manufacturing plant in the Rapids East Commerce Center in the city of Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, according to a report in the Wisconsin Rapids Tribune.

The company, which will invest $80 million in the plant, produces homogenized 6000 series aluminum logs and cut billets primarily from scrap for the aluminum extrusion and forging manufacturing industries. It expects to produce more than 230 million pounds (115,000 tons) of aluminum billet annually at the plant.

The Wisconsin Rapids Tribune reports that Matalco’s Vice President of Corporate Development Robert Roscetti said the new plant will employ 80 full-time workers, including skilled and unskilled staff. Roscetti told the paper their salaries will range from $15 to $20 per hour for general labor to $26 per hour for more specialized skills.

Matalco made the announcement Jan. 30 at Wisconsin Rapids City Hall, according to the newspaper, which also reports that the company would like to work with Mid-State Technical College to develop programs to train workers in central Wisconsin.

The Wisconsin Rapids Tribune notes that the project and related incentives await approval on real estate sales and development agreements.

Matalco says it plans to break ground in April or May, with Roscetti telling the paper the project will take roughly 18 months to build.

According to the Wisconsin Rapids Tribune, Matalco President Tom Horter said the city was attractive “because of its location relative to our market, its exceptional workforce, local investments in quality of life and the comprehensive incentive package and assistance provided from both the state and local levels.”

Matalco was founded in 2005 and operates four remelt and casting facilities in Lordstown and Canton, Ohio; in Bluffton, Indiana; and in Brampton. The company currently has 1,005 million pounds (502,500 tons) of billet production capacity annually.

Matalco is an affiliate of Triple M Metal LP (profiled in the September 2018 issue of Recycling Today), which is Canada’s largest processor of recycled metal. The companies say their relationship ensures that Matalco and its customers are is provided with a stable and ready supply of aluminum scrap and scrap services.
