The state of Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection announced that 18 cities, towns and regional recycling groups will receive municipal recycling technical assistance grants for a combined valued of $121,000. These grants are for innovative projects that promote waste reduction and recycling at the local and regional levels.
“Approximately half of these grants are for regional efforts to economize on the collection of recyclable materials and hazardous household wastes,” said DEP Commissioner Robert W. Golledge, Jr. “These initiatives will benefit not only the towns being served by the grants, but other communities across the state by providing models of recycling collection efficiencies.”
Other highlights of the awards include grants to four towns to partner with their local business communities to promote recycling and composting in the commercial sector, as well as grants to provide school training regarding proper chemical management and to raise awareness of the hazards of mercury in the both the home and school environments.
The communities and regional groups to receive the grants are: Agawam, Athol, Dedham, Fall River, Lynn, Mansfield, Marlborough, Milton, Pioneer Valley Planning Commission, Quincy, Randolph, Revere, South Central Recycling Association of Massachusetts, Springfield, South Shore Recycling Cooperative, Stow, and Wales.
