The Italy-based Marcegaglia Group has agreed to purchase several types of electric arc furnace (EAF) steel mill equipment from fellow Italian company Danieli & C. S.p.A. tied to investments at its recycled-content EAF mill site in Fos-sur-Mer, France.
Danieli has signed an agreement with Marcegaglia to initiate the engineering phase of the flat-product minimill project in Fos-sur-Mer.
Under the agreement, Danieli will deliver a fully automated minimill that will include all the production equipment for scrap preparation, electric steelmaking, slab casting and hot-strip rolling.
The revamped EAF mill will be able to produce up to 2.1 million metric tons per year of carbon and stainless steel hot-rolled coils. Those coils can then be supplied to the sizable Marcegaglia cold-rolling complex in Ravenna, Italy, providing about 30 percent of overall company hot-rolled coil (HRC) demand, according to Danieli.
The new EAF melt shop will feature a Danieli Fastarc Zerobucket furnace equipped with continuous scrap charging, Danieli’s Tornado preheating system and its Q-Melt adaptive process control with autopilot.
Liquid steel will be processed into required grades by twin-ladle refining stations and twin-tank vacuum degassers, which Danieli says will ensure high energy efficiency and reduced carbon and nitrogen oxide emissions.
“The Danieli special mill design will permit Marcegaglia ultra-flexible production, thanks to an integrated Steckel mill and hot-strip mill setup within a single configuration,” Danieli says.
The reconfigured mill is expected to start production by mid-2028.
“The investment reinforces Marcegaglia’s strategic commitment to strengthening its competitive position in the European HRC market through sustainable, high-efficiency production,” Danieli says.
