The Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration announced that the seventh ‘high-priority’ vessel has left the James River port. The vessel, the General Nelson M Walker, is heading to Texas where the vessel will be dismantled and scrapped. All-Star Metals, Brownsville, Tex., will handling the ship scrapping. All-Star previously landed three contracts this past fall to handle vessels from the James River fleet.
The announcement is the seventh time over the past six months that one of the high priority vessels in the reserve fleet has been disposed of.
“Each ship towed from the fleet demonstrates the Administration's commitment to the citizens of this region,” said Maritime Administrator Captain William G. Schubert. “We're getting the job done. We promised to remove these ships and we continue to deliver on that promise.”
